What the GDPR?
GDPR is coming! What is GDPR?
General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a new EU directive that goes into effect on May 25th 2018 with the potential for significant penalties for non-compliance.
Its easier than ever to for businesses to operate across borders digitally and concerns about privacy are driving new legislation that may create serious regulatory and compliance challenges.
The GDPR is seen as the lead that international businesses should take to think about and manage how their cross-border data sharing, sensitive data management and customers privacy is handled.
Understanding where your data lies, how it is managed and who has access are at the core of GDPR. Organisations need to ask and answer a series of questions ahead of the deadline and make the necessary investments and prioritise appropriate technology solutions (where applicable).
Below is a summary of these.
- What is your sensitive data?
- Where is your data located, why is it stored and for how long?
- Can you document this and show where data goes outside your organisation?
- Who has access to this sensitive data?
- When is data being transferred, what part of your processes does this involve?
- How is your data managed (Protection and Compliance)?
- Are you involving the right stakeholders in this review/transformation?
- What technology solutions do we need, to ensure compliance?
- Are we prepared to make the investments needed?
